Swedish psychedelic wanderers, The Orange Revival, sauntered onto the international psych stage in 2011 with their sold out debut album, Black Smoke Rising, followed by shows at Austin Psych Fest that wooed crowds with their 60s hypnotic flavour.
Now with the release of their new album, Futurecent, and a US tour kicking off this week, they’re ready to cement their position in the ever-growing international psych scene. We caught up with frontman Eric Strand about where they’re headed.
Since Black Smoke Rising the band has been writing and touring extensively, so many of the new tracks on Futurecent have actually been on rotation for quite some time, which Strand says makes the new record feel natural and lived-in already.
With mastering by Sonic Boom aka Pete Kember of Spaceman 3 and Spectrum, the album was recorded over two years in an abandoned warehouse using an incredible catalogue of vintage gear: 60s instrumentation, 80s Casios and a 1989 Tascam.
Of working with Sonic Boom, Strand says “He had first mastered our “Lying in the Sand” single, which we really liked, so we asked him if he’d be up for the album, and he wanted to do it. It’s awesome. He’s an idol, and he’s always been very nice to us.
The album was anticipated by the single “Saturation” which was defined ‘a rumbling space-rocker’ by Under The Radar magazine and was remixed by Roger Brogan from Spectrum.
With two psychedelic masters helping to steer The Orange Revival ship, the resulting sound is a collection of doomsday drones, stirring up blues, punk and a touch of desert rock that echoes some of the wildest chapters of rock n roll history, from The Stooges to Brian Jonestown Massacre and early Nebula.
While Strand can reel off a list of 20 artists that have inspired him over the years, he notes that his native Sweden, and living remotely in an isolated Nordic town are the greatest muse:
“A lot of things and people inspire us. But the best inspiration is the autumn here. It’s so nice with all the colours on the trees, and it smells so good. It just puts you in a perfect mood”
Futurecent comes off the back of two years on the road for the band, rambling through the capitals of Europe and the US in support of The Warlocks, White Hills and Spectrum.

So what’s up next, now that Futurecent has been released?
“Right after the Fuzz Club Festival we’re flying over to the US to do a short West Coast tour, and then we are gonna continue to write and record our next album, before heading out on a European tour.”
Eric Strand from The Orange Revival shares their best tour stories...
“There are a lot of good and weird memories! We got drugged and robbed while sleeping outside in Spain. They took all the phones but they left our guitars. They had taken the guitars out of the cases and put them nicely on the ground in front of us, together with our passports.
"They had also carried our guitarist Felix away, to a park next to the one we were sleeping in, and put him on a bench there. When he woke up, he had no clue where he was so he had to ask around for which country he was in. He also found our train tickets and IDs spread out in the park, and one of the bums there was even wearing one of his shirts. Finally he found us and woke us up.
"Another time, in Portland, we had cops pointing guns at us and shouting. They were looking for someone with a gun at the party we were at.
"We got away from a car search outside of Amsterdam because we liked the Rolling Stones!
"We locked ourselves out in Bordeaux and our drummer climbed like three stories to get through the window.
"We locked ourselves out in Berlin and our other drummer climbed two stories...There are a lot of fun memories but it would take forever trying to explain them all!"
