Hákon Aðalsteinsson, best known for playing in The Third Sound, The Brian Jonestown Massacre and Gunman & The Holy Ghost, has been busy working on a new electronic project under the Diagram moniker and we’re super excited to be releasing the debut album, Transmission Response, on May 17th. To announce the release Hákon is now sharing the first cut from the album titled ‘In My Heart, In My Soul’.
Detailing the self-recorded album, a marked departure from his usual rock-oriented work, Hákon states that “the sound is inspired by the minimalism of Suicide, Chrome and 70s German electronica, as well as the film music of Angelo Badalamenti and John Carpenter.†The resulting album, clocking in at 12 tracks, is something to behold - veering between industrial post-punk, dystopian electronica and atmospheric dream-pop. Dealing more so in the latter, the first single offers four sublime minutes of oscillating synths and mechanic drum machine paired against lethargic echo-soaked vocals and chiming guitars. As this was a process of exploration I ended up with around 40 song ideas before I even thought about making an album,†Hakon explains: “‘In My Heart, In My Soul’ is a song I did very early on in the process and one of the few that didn’t change so much from the original idea when I first started thinking about these songs as part of an album. I added little things and did a little bit of fine-tuning regarding the sound, but I really wanted to keep the rawness of the original recording so I was careful not to make it sound too polished.â€
